WHAT ARE INTERCHANGEABLE LENSES?

Many times, when we think about ski goggles, a question comes to mind: is it an aesthetic issue or is it really essential for my health? Well indeed, as you can expect, the answer is the second.

WHAT ARE INTERCHANGEABLE LENSES AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO USE A QUALITY MASK?

When skiing it is essential to wear, either glasses or masks, for health reasons. Now, what are the differences? On the one hand, the goggles cover a greater surface area of your face, so you will have greater protection against the cold, radiation and possible objects (such as snow or insects) that try to impact while you enjoy skiing. In addition, these are perfectly designed to fit the helmet and, what's more, there are models that allow you to wear your own glasses (in case you don't want to wear contact lenses) under them. Contrary to what you might think, their materials favor better ventilation, are more resistant to possible falls and, most importantly, have a much wider variety of lenses for each type of light. We'll talk about this later, but we're already telling you that no, it's not necessary to buy a different mask for each variation in lighting: technology has come a long way to make our task easier.

On the other hand, the glasses are not entirely designed for skiing, although they are for other sports in which they are totally recommended (such as sports glasses for runners, motocross or cycling). This is why, when wearing a helmet, in addition to being more uncomfortable and forcing you to have them graduated, they do not have such optimal support as to allow you to wear the helmet on top of the mask as you would, and can fall off when jumping and jumping. turns. Also, of course, they only cover your eyes, leaving much of your face exposed. On the other hand, oddly enough, they give more heat. And you will think: “really?”. Yeah! They concentrate heat and make you sweat more, which will make them fog up more easily. In short, you don't want to find yourself out on a silly day of wind, sun, and snow without a good mask.

Let's move on to the next point: clamping. This part seems obvious, but it is one of the most important, since continually putting on the mask can not only be a complete nuisance, but also cause us to have an accident due to excessive distractions in our field of vision. We must make sure that they are compatible with our helmet. In fact, if the elastic band has silicone strips (which adhere to it, increasing the fixation), much better. It is also important to look at its resistance, so that it lasts and does not break easily.

When fitting it to the helmet, we will make sure of two things: that there is no gap between the upper part and the helmet, and that the lower part does not press on the nose. For the latter, it is highly recommended to look at the size of the frame. Currently there are three types of this: the small one, for children; the medium, generic for adults; the big one, when we need/want to cover more of the face.

THE LENSES

Now yes, let's go to the main part of the mask and the one that usually causes the most headaches in its choice due to all the variety that we find: the lenses. Polarized, photochromic, blizzard, interchangeable lenses... and last but not least, there are different colored lenses! Don't worry, don't panic, because in the articles on this blog you will find all the information you need to make the best choice.

  • UV RADIATION PROTECTION

The first factor to take into account is that the lenses are of quality and, therefore, protect (among other things) from UV radiation to avoid any possible injury such as snow blindness. This type of blindness can occur with simple exposure, but there are also problems caused by burns on the cornea or retina. It should not be forgotten that snow powers 80% more radiation projection.

  • FOGGING AND ANTI-FOG SYSTEM

Item number two is fogging. A good anti-condensation system will give us life, taking away the tedious task of constantly cleaning the lenses. In addition to something obvious: we must be able to see the relief and possible obstacles in our path to avoid accidents.

  • COLOR AND TYPE OF LENS

Continuing with these premises to take into account when choosing a mask, we have reached the point that had us most expecting: the lenses, their color and type. As we have told you, there are many types of lenses, and in this case we are going to focus on explaining which are the interchangeable ones, but you have information about the rest in other articles on the blog. As you most likely know, depending on the weather and the light intensity we will have to use a lens with a different level of VLT (Visible Light Transmission) protection. That is, CAT 1 lenses are suitable for cloudy days (they will be more translucent) and low visibility, while CAT 3 lenses are suitable for clear and sunny days. The characteristic of interchangeable lenses is that it frees us from the need to have a different frame for each day since, thanks to our magnetic system, you can change your lens in a few seconds. As we know, weather conditions are difficult to predict in the mountains, so with these glasses you will save space and comfort. You will only have to keep the other lens in your pocket next to your ski pass in case it is necessary.
